The City of Leavenworth is hiring for a Deputy Director of Finance to support the leadership and daily operations of our Finance Department. Our ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, analytical professional who values public service and is committed to responsible stewardship of public resources.

Responsibilities 

The Deputy Director of Finance assists in managing all aspects of municipal finance, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, capital assets, purchasing, general ledger oversight, financial reporting, and state and federal compliance. This position plays a key role in maintaining the City’s financial integrity and ensuring transparency and accountability in all financial operations.

The Deputy Director will supervise accounting staff, including Accountants and Senior Accountants, provide leadership and professional development, and may assume the duties of the Finance Director in his or her absence. Responsibilities include oversight of monthly journal entries and bank reconciliations, review and approval of payroll and accounts payable, coordination of the annual independent audit, assistance with preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), support of the Capital Improvement Plan, and participation in the development of the annual budget and long-term financial planning.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, public administration, or a related field; five (5) years of professional finance/accounting experience OR successful completion of the CPA exam with at least two (2) years of public accounting experience; and at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. A valid driver’s license is required. Experience in Kansas local government and familiarity with Tyler Technologies Munis financial software is preferred.

Compensation & Benefit

    • Anticipated Hiring Range: $79,466 – $99,333 (dependent on qualifications and experience) 
    • Retirement: Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS)
    • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and paid leave
