The City of Junction City is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented City Planner to support the development and implementation of comprehensive planning initiatives, zoning regulations, and land use policies. This position helps guide the City’s physical, social, and economic development by promoting coordinated, sustainable growth. The ideal candidate has experience in municipal planning, land use analysis, and public engagement.
Examples of Duties
- Prepare, update, and maintain the City’s comprehensive plan, zoning ordinances, land use maps, and related planning documents.
- Review development proposals, site plans, subdivision plats, and rezoning requests for compliance with City codes and long-range planning goals.
- Conduct research and analysis of demographic, economic, environmental, and housing trends to support planning recommendations and policy decisions.
- Provide technical assistance and professional planning guidance to City officials, staff, developers, and the public.
- Present findings and recommendations to the Planning Commission, City Council, zoning boards, and other governing bodies.
- Support and facilitate community engagement activities such as public meetings, workshops, and surveys.
- Coordinate with engineers, architects, and other professionals to assist with development projects and infrastructure planning.
- Assist in the administration and enforcement of zoning and development regulations.
- Monitor and interpret state and federal laws and regulations impacting land use and community development.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to planning activities, applications, and decisions.
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, Architecture, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
- 2–5 years of professional planning experience, preferably in a municipal or regional government setting.
- AICP certification (or ability to obtain certification within two years) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of urban planning principles, land use regulation, zoning, and community development practices.
- Familiarity with subdivision regulations, environmental review concepts, and public policy processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public presentations and report writing.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Proficiency with GIS and Microsoft Office; familiarity with planning/design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment; strong organizational skills.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Primarily office-based with occasional fieldwork.
- Evening meetings and public hearings may be required.
