Maintaining openness in government is a key responsibility for elected and appointed city officials. It is critical that city and county attorneys, along with elected and appointed officials, have a working knowledge of both the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) and Kansas Open Records Act (KORA). This workshop provides an in-depth legal analysis of both. During the KOMA portion of the training, attendees will learn about: - Types of governmental bodies and meetings covered by KOMA;
- Requirements of the Act;
- Serial meetings;
- Executive sessions, including proper procedure to recess; authorized subject matter, and who may attend; and enforcement and penalties.
The KORA section of the training will focus on: - Requirements of the Act;
- Policies and procedures all cities should establish;
- KORA exemptions.
Cost to attend this course is $100 for members, and $125 for nonmembers. Anyone who will be watching the training (whether in its entirety or coming in and out of the room) must register and pay the course fee. All participants receive the most up-to-date KORA and KOMA manuals - Please register by Wednesday August 9, 2023 to ensure you receive your manuals in time. This course has been submitted for CLE credit and approved for 0.75 CMC/MMC credit. MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER WITH AN EMAIL YOU ACTIVELY CHECK AS THIS IS HOW YOU WILL RECEIVE THE MATERIALS AND ZOOM LINK. A recording of this MTI will be made available to those who registered ahead of time. Cancellations must be made three business days prior to the event for a full refund. Cancellations must be in writing via email to Rynae Redd; no phone cancellations will be accepted.
