The cities of Kansas believe in the mission of encouraging civic engagement and education. Over the last decade, the League of Kansas Municipalities has organized a junior high essay contest to encourage good government and to help satisfy the Kansas Board of Education civic requirements.
The essay asks students to describe what they would do as mayors to improve their community. Our hope is that seventh-grade teachers across Kansas will to use the essay to address the state’s 7th Grade Civics-Government Benchmarks. We will select a winner from six regions across the state, and each winning student will receive a $250 savings bond in addition to recognition at the state capitol on City Hall Day in February.
