The cities of Kansas believe in the mission of encouraging civic engagement and education. Over the last decade, the League of Kansas Municipalities has organized a junior high essay contest to encourage good government and to help satisfy the Kansas Board of Education civic requirements.
The essay asks students to describe what they would do as mayor to improve their community. Our hope is that seventh-grade teachers across Kansas will use the essay to address the state’s 7th Grade Civics-Government Benchmarks. We will select a winner from six regions across the state, and each winning student will receive a $125 cash prize in addition to recognition at Local Government Day in January. One overall winner will also be selected to represent the entire state and will receive a $250 cash prize.
contest is open to all Kansas students enrolled in the 7th grade during the
2016-2017 school year. Essays must be received at the League office by Friday,
November 18, 2016. Winners will be notified by the beginning of January 2017.
